Education in Australia

In Australia, you experience a unique kind of education – a learning style that encourages innovative, creative, independent thinking. You build skills to give you an advantage – academically, personally and professionally. Unlike many countries in which there is an unconnected system of qualifications, Australia has a single national and comprehensive system of national qualifications which are the basis of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). AQF qualifications are endorsed by Australian governments, so an AQF qualification is recognized all around Australia and by other countries. The Australian Qualifications Framework (commonly known as the AQF) is a unified system of national qualifications in schools, vocational education and training (TAFEs and private providers) and the higher education sector (mainly universities).

Student Life in Australia: Opportunities and Challenges

Multi-cultural environment
Australia encourages people to maintain their original culture, whilst also taking on an Australian identity. Students can enjoy a multi-cultural environment and celebrate cultural diversity.

Accommodation
Most universities and colleges provide accommodation on or near to their campus. University apartments, residential colleges and halls of residence are generally available. International students often enjoy staying at the halls of residence as they have an opportunity to mix with many other students on a full-time basis. This is also one of the cheapest options for accommodation. Meals and some cleaning services are usually provided.

Work permission
International students studying in Australia on a student visa can apply for permission to work once they commence their course. A visa with permission to work enables you to work up to 20 hours a week on a casual basis during course time and full-time during vacation periods.

The money that you earn from working in Australia should only supplement your income and not be used as the only source of income. Before coming to Australia, students must show that they have enough money to pay for living expenses, education costs and travel for the duration of their study.

Sports, recreational and cultural activities
Campuses offer spacious surroundings suitable for social, sporting and other outdoor activities. They are also centrally located for students to experience the sophistication of our cities and excitement of our entertainment facilities. There are plenty of opportunities for international students to have an enjoyable time with friends.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
International students studying in Australia are required to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of their student visa. OSHC covers most medical expenses and the cost of hospital care which international students may need while in Australia. OSHC will also pay for most prescription drugs and emergency ambulance transport. Dental and optometry costs are not included but students may also take out additional cover.

Safety
Students can contact any Australian Education Centre to learn more about personal safety, or attend a safety orientation session at their school upon their arrival in Australia.

English proficiency
International students need fluency in the English language if they are to succeed at an Australian campus. To be a successful student in Australia, it is necessary to adapt to these methods of learning. Most institutions in Australia offer counseling services and assistance to develop effective study skills.
