Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Overview

Considered by many as the most respected English-language test in the world, the TOEFL(Test of English as a Foreign Language) test is accepted by over10,000 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the United States and the U.K. To date, over 30 million people across the globe have taken the TOEFL® test to demonstrate their proficiency in the English-language.

Candidates who write the TOEFL test include students planning to undertake higher education overseas, English-language learning program admissions, candidates applying for scholarships and certifications, and students and workers applying for visas, among others.

The TOEFL is administered both as an internet based test and a paper based test. The TOEFL iBT test is preferred by institutions as it measures all 4 communication skills — reading, listening, speaking, and writing. It is administered via the internet and takes a total of about 4 ½ hours to complete. The revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test is only offered in places where it is not possible to administer an online test. The paper based test measures only your reading, listening and writing abilities.

Some examples of tasks that you will have to perform include : Read or listen carefully to some information or instructions, and then speak in response to a question; Read, listen and write down an answer to a question.

FAQ

The TOEFL online (called iBT test) is delivered via the internet. It tests your reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. Most institutes prefer this version, as it is a comprehensive assessment of your language proficiency in all spheres.

The TOEFL PBT test has been replaced by the revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test. This test is offered only where testing via the internet is not possible and it measures reading, listening and writing (no speaking).

Q. How often is the TOEFL test administered?

The TOEFL iBT is given on predetermined dates, over 50 times a year, and you can pick a date that is convenient.
