Considered by many as the most respected English-language test in the world, the TOEFL(Test of English as a Foreign Language) test is accepted by over10,000 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the United States and the U.K. To date, over 30 million people across the globe have taken the TOEFL® test to demonstrate their proficiency in the English-language.
Candidates who write the TOEFL test include students planning to undertake higher education overseas, English-language learning program admissions, candidates applying for scholarships and certifications, and students and workers applying for visas, among others.
The TOEFL is administered both as an internet based test and a paper based test. The TOEFL iBT test is preferred by institutions as it measures all 4 communication skills — reading, listening, speaking, and writing. It is administered via the internet and takes a total of about 4 ½ hours to complete. The revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test is only offered in places where it is not possible to administer an online test. The paper based test measures only your reading, listening and writing abilities.
Some examples of tasks that you will have to perform include : Read or listen carefully to some information or instructions, and then speak in response to a question; Read, listen and write down an answer to a question.
The time limit is 60-80 minutes, and you will be required to read 3 or 4 passages and answer some questions.
Within a duration of 60-90 minutes, you have to answer questions based on audio recordings of lectures or classroom discussions and conversations.
You will have to express your opinion on a topic that is familiar to you, or have to speak based on the reading and listening tasks. This section is 20 minutes long.
You will be given 50 minutes to write down some essays, or support an opinion in writing.
In addition to accents from North America, you will hear accents from the U.K., New Zealand or Australia in the Listening and Speaking sections of the TOEFL iBT test.
