Good News for Indian Doctors! Indian Medical Graduates Can Now Practice in USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia!

September 26, 2023

In a significant development for the Indian medical community, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has secured a 10-year recognition status from the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), opening doors for Indian medical graduates to practice medicine abroad. Graduates from all 706 existing medical colleges in India will now be able to practice medicine in countries like the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The Union Health Ministry made this momentous announcement through a press release.

WFME is a global organisation that is dedicated to improving the quality of medical education worldwide. This groundbreaking recognition equips medical graduates with degrees from Indian institutions to embark on postgraduate training or practice medicine in countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, where WFME recognition is a prerequisite.

Under this new initiative, all 706 existing medical colleges in India have received WFME accreditation, and any new medical colleges established over the next decade will automatically gain WFME accreditation status. Beyond its international appeal, this recognition empowers the NMC to elevate the quality and standards of medical education in India, aligning it with global best practices and benchmarks.

The WFME, a global organisation dedicated to enhancing medical education's quality worldwide, embodies a mission aimed at achieving better healthcare for all and advancing the highest scientific and ethical standards in medical education.

Speaking on this achievement, a spokesperson from the Health Ministry stated, "This recognition underscores the commitment of Indian medical institutions to adhere to global standards. It not only offers our students the opportunity to pursue their careers worldwide but also positions India as an attractive destination for international students due to our globally recognised standards."

The WFME recognition process incurs a fee of Rs 4,98,5142 ($60,000) per medical college, covering expenses related to site visits, travel, and accommodation for assessment teams. With a total of 706 medical colleges in India seeking WFME recognition, this amounts to approximately Rs 351.9 crore ($4,23,60,000), ensuring that the NMC's recognition extends to all medical colleges under its purview.

This monumental achievement not only opens up new horizons for Indian medical graduates but also strengthens the global standing of Indian medical institutions and professionals. It fosters academic collaborations, promotes ongoing improvements and innovation in medical education, and instills a culture of quality assurance among medical educators and institutions.

The NMC, India's premier regulatory body overseeing medical education and practice in the country, is committed to delivering quality medical education and training across the nation. With the WFME recognition, Indian medical graduates can now chart a global path in the field of medicine, ensuring India's contributions to the world of healthcare continue to thrive.
