What kind of part-time jobs can international students take up in Australia?
by Arunachalam
One of the main advantages of studying in Australia is the ability to work part-time during the academic year. If you hold a student visa, you are allowed to work full time during designated course breaks and up to 40 hours per fortnight while enrolled in the course. You are permitted to work a full-time job if you are a PhD or Master’s by Research student.
International students pursuing graduate or postgraduate degrees in Australia can choose from a wide variety of part-time jobs in industries including retail, hospitality, business, or administrative services, among others. While studying abroad, students have a choice between on-campus and off-campus employment options.
Retail Sales Assistant
There are several options for part-time employment in Australia's retail industry. Students can work as retail assistants in a range of retail settings, including department stores, grocery stores, apparel stores, beauty supply stores, home goods stores, and more. If you enjoy dealing with people, working in the retail industry is a great choice. Students who work in this field get valuable skills like teamwork and customer service.
Aged care worker
In Australia, there is a strong demand for elderly care employees due to the country's ageing population. More and more working professionals are looking for aged care providers to look after their elderly relatives. Students have the option of working part-time in an elderly care facility or helping seniors who require assistance with daily activities.
Waiter
Students may want to consider taking a part-time work as a waiter or a food and beverage attendant because there is a rising need for staff in Australia's hospitality industry. You can work as a waiter in dining establishments like restaurants, hotels, clubs, and cafes. A waiter's duties may include welcoming patrons, introducing them to the menu, taking orders, serving food and beverages, and collecting payment.
Receptionist
Although a degree or a comparable qualification is not required for the position, international students in Australia can easily obtain a part-time job as a receptionist or front office executive. Almost all business institutions, including hotels, hospitals, corporations, private organisations, etc., have openings for receptionist positions.
Bartender
Another well-liked part-time career option that is widely accessible in Australia is bartending. Customers are served mixed alcoholic drinks. Bartenders operate in dining establishments, nightclubs, hotels, catering events, and other places that provide food service. In Australia, bartenders who sell alcoholic drinks must be at least 18 years old and be familiar with local and state regulations on the sale of liquor in particular.
Student Assistant
Students in universities are particularly interested in part-time employment opportunities. You stand a good chance of being employed as a student assistant if you are outgoing and have a strong academic record. Speaking English fluently and having the capacity to mentor pupils will be advantages for this position.
Working conditions for International students in Australia
Make sure you can work in Australia with your student visa. If not, you must request authorization to work.
During their academic time, international students with student visas are permitted to work a total of 40 hours each fortnight. During semester or summer breaks you can work limitlessly.
A foreign student must have an Australian bank account in order for his or her employer to deposit funds if they decide to hire him or her to work. It is advised that you open an Australian bank account before you travel so that you can swiftly and easily access your money.
Each overseas student who works part-time in Australia is required to pay taxes on their income and submit a tax return. All international students who intend to work part-time should submit an online or paper application for a Tax File Number (TFN) through the Australian Taxation Office website. Furthermore, take note that before the students file their tax returns, the employer will give them a tax slip that clearly lists their income, bonuses, taxes paid, etc.
Students who want to work part-time should enrol in a programme that the Australian government has legally approved.
Throughout their time in Australia, international students should also obtain and maintain OSHC, or Overseas Student Health Coverage.
Prepare a decent résumé that highlights your abilities, interests, and prior employment before you start your job search in Australia. Your educational background might also be a plus.
Conclusion
Part-time employment not only helps students pay for living expenses while they are studying in Australia, but it also gives them the chance to learn about and embrace new cultures while honing their English language abilities. Opportunities for employment expose students to a large social network and enhance their quality of life while abroad.
